Cuts and Editing: Versions of a Scene

We’re going show you examples of the wonderful power of editing, and how friggin fun it can be.
Recently we produced a video on how lining a script can help with developing your shot lists. We used a very simple 4 line script to demonstrate the process, recorded those various shots and then produced an edit with them.
The point of the video was to show the importance of well-prepared shot lists to ensure you get the right footage when on set. But it also demonstrated…
…the power of editing. How the juxtaposition of different shots, montage, is still one of the most powerful aspects of film. How it creates something new and unique. Or stupid and silly like that cut.
Afterward, we were done with that video, I played around a little with that bin of footage and came up with my own edit
Because I worked on the assembly edit, I saw a lot of interesting takes that started giving me ideas, particularly turning the idea of turning the focus from Jane to Julie and making her the object of our sympathy.
I showed Spuds and of course, he jumped right into the bin too.
Editing is powerful and a lot of fun. With the same footage we produced 3 completely different scenes. Trick is, get the right amount of coverage of good talent and there’s a so much you can do.
Thanks again to Courtney and Thea who were awesome and gave us wonderful footage to play with.
Do you guys have examples of alternate edits of your videos? Does anyone want access to the footage to take a stab at it? Let us know in the comments below.
